Accutane Linked to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Inflammatory bowel disease refers to a family of systemic diseases that cause severe inflammation and ulceration in the intestines. Doctors are uncertain as to the cause of IBD, but it could be due to diet, environment, or genetics. Cases of IBD have also been linked to use of certain medications, including Accutane, an acne medication that carries a number of serious side effects.
Types of IBD
There are two major types of IBD: ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and ulcers in the lining of the large intestine. Crohn's disease, which is more serious, typically affects the lower part of the small intestine as well as the large intestine, causing inflammation in deeper layers of the intestinal wall. IBD is not curable, but can be managed. Medications and dietary changes can reduce or eliminate symptoms for periods of time. Treatment focuses on preventing flare-ups, which are difficult to treat.
Symptoms
Symptoms of the different forms of IBD are similar, and include:
- Diarrhea, often severe
- Abdominal pain
- Rectal bleeding
- Bloody stool
Diarrhea with IBD can be severe enough to cause dehydration, which can lead to drops in blood pressure. Bleeding in the intestines can lead to anemia.
If you experience any of these symptoms, you should see your doctor immediately. If you have any questions about inflammatory bowel disease and its connection to Accutane, please contact a pharmaceutical injury attorney in your area today for more information.
